BIOGRAPHY

Dana Holst is a mid career Canadian artist based in Edmonton, Alberta, working primarily in painting, drawing and printmaking.  Holst’s work is an ongoing investigation into the human experience, focusing on the self and it’s place within society.  Themes of social stereotyping and power struggles between the sexes are habitual for Holst who obsesses with depicting the female experience in conflict.  Her girl figures are usually dressed in frilly costumes with matching hair bows and equally menacing emotions.  Mysterious scenarios for the wayward girls include hunting for wild animals and living out fairytale fantasies in an attempt to find and exert power.

In 2011 Holst was selected by Wajdi Mouawad, the director of the Theatre Francais (National Arts Centre in Ottawa) to be Associate Visual Artist for the 2011-2012 season titled “Nous Ne Sommes Pas Dangereux”.  Her work is included in private collections throughout Canada and the United States as well as the public collections of Alberta Foundation for the Arts (Edmonton, AB), Agnes Etherington Art Centre, (Kingston, ON), Art Bank (Ottawa, ON) and Glenbow Museum (Calgary,AB).

Upcoming exhibitions include The Tell-Tale Heart, a solo exhibition with Galerie St. Laurent + Hill in Ottawa, Ontario in September 2013; Betwixt and Between a two-person show with Jude Griebel at The Reach Museum in Abbostford, BC in January 2014; and La Vie Fantastique a travelling group exhibition curated by Shane Golby for AGA Trex Program.
